Getting the As is a matter of getting the equations right. The right amount of concentration and focus you put into your studies; the right amount of exercise in the related skill; and above all, one can never forget the importance in also having a balanced lifestyle.

All work but no play makes Jack a dull boy

No student should ever resort to morphing themselves into nerdy bookworms whose lives revolve only around doing homework, studying revision books and flipping through teacher’s notes. Get involved in games and activities where you can relax and learn to enjoy your life. Remember to balance having fun and studying because a tensed mind will not bring you anywhere near the As.

Eat a healthy diet

Most students forget one essential item they need to score the As – a healthy body and a healthy mind. While most are just too busy indulging themselves in their notes and last-minute studying, they forget to feed the body with the necessary nutrients. Stop feeding your hunger pangs with unhealthy snacks such as crackers and instant noodles. Instead, store more fruits at home and start eating decent meals at decent hours of the day.

Rest early

There is absolutely no sense in having to stay up late to study. If you are always waking up to a tired body and a constantly drifting mind, you definitely need more quality rest. Studying late into the night will only cause your bodily functions to get dysfunctional. Rest early so that you can wake up feeling fresh and alert the next day.

Adopting healthy habits is never an easy one. But with the right determination and attitude to work it out, living these good habits can be an even more rewarding experience than scoring your string of As.

There is no absolute yes or no to this question. Only you can find the answer in yourself and give yourself the chance to prove what you believe in. As a continuation to Part 1, the following thoughts may just help you find that missing link that you may be looking for.

I don’t have charisma, which makes me a less unqualified tutor

Everyone is born with a certain set of personality that overshadows their other more subtle personalities. If you’re saying that your friend has natural, innate charisma that allows him to teach better, you may be right. But it doesn’t mean that one who lacks charisma cannot teach well and would later go on to become a bad tutor. Charisma, like experience is also built and attained over time.

I find it difficult to teach students who score below average

No student chooses to do badly in their examinations. Most would want to take pride in doing well and be appreciated for their effort. Naturally, it would be more difficult to convert a D-scoring student to a high-flying A student. Take it as a challenge to help the student find a studying method that works for him. Success never comes easy but often tastes sweeter when you see improvement on struggling students.

I’m not confident when teaching students

If you are constantly aware that you lack in knowledge and you fear not being able to provide solutions to all your students’ questions, this will most certainly disrupt your flow in teaching and affect your level of confidence. Get your facts and knowledge right and you will naturally gain confidence when teaching students. Always be prepared before you teach your students. Do your necessary homework and understand your lesson plans.

What makes a tutor good is a very subjective issue. Some tutors are good not because they are more knowledgeable about the subjects they are teaching but because they are driven by their own motivation to help the student. There is no absolute answer whether or not one is really cut out to be a tutor because it’s just a matter of how you look upon yourself.

Having your kid to take interest in studying is an action that needs a lot of patience and perseverance. More often than not, the battle is considered half won if you can actually get your kid to open up to you. Acceptance comes a lot easier when there is less resistance.

Don’t resort to short cuts

There is no lasting effect in quick solutions. Packing your kid’s timetable with all sorts of tuition in order to get him to study is a definite no-no. In fact, you’re giving your kid even more unnecessary pressure that would force him to withdraw further from studying. Guide him towards understanding the purpose in studying. Shaping the right attitude may take time and require a lot of putting up with rebellious attitude but the effect is rather a long-lasting one.

Ensure the right influence

Positive people and environment play a strong part in instilling the right attitude and mindset to your kid. Make sure he is mixing with the right crowd by encouraging him to invite his friends over. Getting to know his friends would ensure that he is having the right company with him, and thus, ensuring the right influence on him.

not_study22.jpg

Don’t give in to anger and frustration

Pouring your frustrations over his lack of interest in studying should never be your choice of putting your mind through to him. Control your emotions well and educate your kid over time through positive encouragements and understanding towards his problems. Allow your kid to feel that it is safe for him to talk to you about his problems and that you will be there to help him.

Work out which way works best to encourage your kid to study and apply it. Be patient with him and take control of the situation without having your kid feel that you are controlling his life. Driving him to the wall will only suffocate him with resistance and make him even less likely to like studying.
