Teaching is an art that requires not only knowledge but the right amount of patience, technique and persistence in order to obtain results. Most students do not get things right in their first lesson and need constant repetition and a sharp mind to answer their possibly “out-of-the-mind” questions. So how should teachers these days teach in a classroom that is fast likened to a battlefield?
Get the big picture
It’s a brave new world out there. Students get introduced to the World Wide Web while still weaning in their diapers, and they get their own mobile phones for their 8th birthday anniversary. With so much more exposure earlier in their lives, it’s no wonder why students now tend to be more quick-witted and less afraid to interact with their tutors, which is not entirely a bad thing. Understand their world, and you will be able to work out the precise way to educate them.

Adapt to the situation
Tutors should expect to exercise more control on the students under such conditions to have order in class. Encourage interaction but keep the topics relevant and healthy. Remember to adapt to the constantly changing learning environment out there. You can’t still be talking about the Care Bears cartoon when you have a teenage CSI-fanatic student, can you?
Adopting the yin and yang
You cannot pit fire against fire, just like you should never use a harsh method against a hard-headed student. Play the balancing act and use a method that can complement your student’s attitude. Rebellious students will only react much stronger against tutors who carry their whip around them, unless you want to get a complaint lodged against you over a four-letter word uttered. Remember, be firm but not harsh.
Educating students should always be a skill that needs to be updated over time. It’s almost similar to being IT professionals and doctors who keep themselves abreast with new discoveries to stay ahead of the pack. Likewise for the tutors - get the big picture, adapt to the situation and stay balanced on the act.

Attention all students,
Is working on strategies to eliminate your opponent in strategy games your way of exercising the mind like how Mathematics is meant to do, or is playing your virtual Barbie and Ken dolls in The Sims your way of learning about life? Don’t be surprised but you’re not all wrong. But being glued to the computer playing games and chatting all day, all night? Now, that does not sound too right either.
Practice moderation
Spending a reasonable amount of time indulging in your favourite games or chatting with your friends in front of your computer is not wrong. But don’t forget to practice moderation. Never take things too far by getting addicted or glued to your computer all day, all night and miss out on everything that is happening around you.
Remember, do not neglect your studies, family and friends, and most importantly, your life by throwing away your youth to the computer. Time is better spent in real life interacting with real people and working a solution on real problems.

Organize your time
Set aside a sensible time of the day for your games and chat. Playing games or chatting till late into the night or till the wee hours of the morning is a bad idea, unless waking up the next day at noon when the sun comes biting into your skin is deemed productive for you.
Early risers always have a fresher mind to start the day with. Waking up feeling dead, drowsy and hung over when half the day has gone by will only make you feel more lethargic for most of the day. And no, drowning your body with caffeine to stay alert is not the best solution either.
Getting your share of entertainment and knowledge from games and chat is never a bad idea. But be mindful of the time allocated in its application as a practice gone too far will only get you burnt and wasted. Just remember to practice moderation and organize your time well.

Most students these days live on the “kiasu” mentality, being “afraid to lose” since young. Every parent would like to see their children do well in life and win in everything possible, thus bearing a “trophy child”. However, there is only such a thin line bordering “kiasu” and healthy competition. Which attitude are you encouraging to your child then?
Accept losing as part of being successful
A “kiasu” child would be most unlikely to take losing in stride, while a child who takes challenges as healthy competition is more willing to accept a lost and sportingly cheer for the winning party. Encourage your child to take losing as part of a bigger step towards winning and a motivation to push harder and perform better the next time around. Remember, one can never taste success without first having a taste of failure.

Appreciate your competition
Most “kiasu” children dislike competition. They prefer being the only winner, conquering the throne and eliminating everyone else. Instead of instilling such narrow perspective towards life, get your child to appreciate their competition. There is no glory in winning a one-man race. Competition drives a person to move forward and stretch their abilities. Without competition, you will never appreciate success and understand how far you can actually go.
Share your success
Always encourage your child to share their success with other people. A person who is a miser with knowledge will never achieve greater knowledge and bigger success. Teaching others what you know is also a form of studying, as you are reinforcing what you have learnt when explaining to others. Therefore, cheer on your child to be generous with knowledge in order to learn a greater deal from others.
Now a scenario quite visibly seen in the urban community, the new generation of youth is being choked with such narrow perspective in life and studies while their parents get all heated up in their competition for a trophy child. Is this how you want to see your children to grow up to be? Let us all encourage healthy competition and not otherwise.
